Today Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen announced that
the President has nominated General Wesley K. Clark to replace
General George A. Joulwan as Supreme Allied Commander, Europe and
Commander-in-Chief, United States European Command, Stuttgart,
Germany.
Since June 26, 1996, General Clark has commanded the United
States Southern Command. As Commander-in-Chief of the United

General Joulwan previously announced he would retire this
summer after 36 years of commissioned service. General Joulwan
has served as Supreme Allied Commander, Europe, since October 21,
