IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 345-97
June 27, 1997

DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE AND NORTH KOREAN MILITARY REPRESENTATIVES AGREE TO THREE JOINT RECOVERY OPERATIONS

Department of Defense and North Korean military representatives agreed in New York this morning on details to expand efforts to account for U. S. service personnel missing from the Korean War.

The two sides finalized details over the past three days for three joint recovery operations to take place in July, September and October. Discussions focused on medical evacuation, communications and other operational issues. These recovery operations will take place near battle sites in Unsan County in the northwest part of North Korea. The sites are approximately 50 miles southeast of the Yalu River.

The two sides also agreed to conduct a joint archival review in early August. It will focus on materials in the Korean War Museum in Pyongyang, including materials previously viewed by American officials.
