GENERAL SHALIKASHVILI TO BE HONORED BY BOY SCOUTS
General John M. Shalikashvili, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has been named by the National Capitol Area Council of Boy Scouts of America as the honoree for the 1996-1997 class of Eagle Scouts.
In that role, he will be the featured speaker for the annual Eagle Career Day banquet at the Sheraton Washington Hotel on September 8, 1997.
Secretary of the Air Force Sheila Widnall will serve as banquet chairperson.
Each new class of Eagle Scouts is named for an honoree that epitomizes the values promoted in Scouting.
Previous honorees have included former Senator Sam Nunn, Congressman Richard Gephardt, and Secretary of the Army Togo West.
This year's banquet will recognize more than 600 young men who have achieved Scouting's highest rank.
The event culminates Eagle Career Day in which Eagle Scouts are paired with successful
professionals in industry and government who serve as role models in the Scouts' specific
areas of interest.
The Scouts accompany their mentors during a typical business day to learn of
the requirements and activities of that particular career path.
General Shalikashvili will host
an Eagle Scout at the Pentagon and accompany him to the banquet that evening.
