The Secretary of Defense announced today that he has directed United States military assets to deploy in support of fire fighting efforts in Indonesia. This deployment is part of a package of immediate technical assistance which the United States is sending to the most seriously affected countries in that region.
Military support will include 60 crew and support personnel for three C-130 aircraft, two equipped with Mobile Aerial Fire Fighting Systems (MAFFS), and one flying in support.
The crew and aircraft are from the 153d Airlift Wing, from the Wyoming Air National Guard. Once in region, they will be under the direction of the United States Pacific Command.
The anticipated length of the operation is 30 days.
