IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 608-97
November 10, 1997

SECRETARY OF DEFENSE POSTPONES ASIA TRIP

Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen has decided to postpone his planned trip to Asia.

General Henry H. Shelton, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will also postpone his planned travel to the region.

The Secretary hopes to reschedule his trip to early 1998.

The Secretary decided, after consultation with the President and National Security Advisor Sandy Berger, to remain in Washington as the U.S. works to support the U.N. efforts to compel compliance with U.N. resolutions requiring Iraq to cease work on weapons of mass destruction.

The Secretary was scheduled to visit Korea, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and Japan between November 12 and 23.
