Readout of Meeting with Deputy Secretary Ash Carter and Indian Parliamentarians

            Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs George Little provided the following readout:

            “This morning Deputy Secretary of Defense Ash Carter hosted Indian parliamentarians representing numerous political parties from both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha houses at the Pentagon.  The meeting was part of a visit organized by the India-United States Forum of Parliamentarians, which fosters closer relationships between both nations.

            “The group discussed issues of mutual importance to the U.S.-India relationship, including the shared values and interests between the two nations, and the importance that the United States places on India as part of its strategic rebalance to the Asia-Pacific region.  The U.S.-India relationship is one of the defining partnerships for the 21st century.

            “Deputy Secretary Carter underscored the huge strides that have been made in advancing the bilateral defense relationship and opportunities for the future.  Deputy Secretary Carter discussed the new initiative he is leading on behalf of the Department of Defense to streamline our bureaucratic processes and make our defense trade more simple, responsive and effective.

            “The group also discussed topics of regional importance, including transition in Afghanistan.  Deputy Secretary Carter looks forward to continuing meetings with Indian counterparts during a visit to New Delhi later this summer.”
