DOD TO AWARD $8 MILLION TO HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES/UNIVERSITIES AND MINORITY INSTITUTIONS

Acting Director of Defense Research and Engineering George Singley today announced plans to award 43 grants totaling almost $8 million of fiscal year 1998 funds to 42 Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority Institutions (HBCU/MI) to enhance programs and capabilities at these institutions in scientific disciplines critical to the national security functions of the Department of Defense and to increase the number of underrepresented minority graduates in fields of science, engineering, and mathematics.

The grants were competitively selected from164 proposals submitted to the Army Research Office (ARO) and the Office of Naval Research (ONR) in response to a solicitation in August 1997. Defense agencies participating in the program include the Army Research Office, the Office of Naval Research, and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR).

Thirty-five awards, sponsored by ARO and AFOSR and ranging from $25,000 to $400,000, will provide for the acquisition of science and technology equipment and instrumentation for education and research program enhancements. Eight awards, sponsored by ONR and averaging $2 million each over a five-year period, are aimed at strengthening academic programs in the fields of science, engineering, and/or mathematics.

Awards will be made only after written agreements have been reached between the Department and the institutions. A list of recipients is attached.
