DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE ISSUES "OPERATION BE FIT"INSTALLATION RESOURCE KIT

The Department of Defense (DoD) has begun issuing "Operation Be Fit" installation resource kits to more than 400 military installations and 350 ships worldwide. Explaining the purpose of the kits, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Personnel Support, Families and Education Carolyn Becraft said, "These 'Operation Be Fit' installation resource kits will help installation Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) directors promote events and activities designed to increase the level of physical activity among service members, family members, and DoD civilian employees."

The resource kits are designed for use on military installations during 1998. They include ideas and information that will assist in promoting physical activity in MWR fitness conditioning, recreation, and sports programs. The kits also contain an "Operation Be Fit" smart book which details innovative physical activities submitted by installation MWR directors, promotional posters, and information about the use of a new logo designed specifically for "Operation Be Fit." In addition to information about DoD programs and initiatives, the kit provides material from the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports and from the Center for Disease Control, detailing programs available for family members and youth. Becraft said: "This kit is a centerpiece for the "Operation Be Fit" program. Commanders should use the ideas and information in the kit to make quantum improvements in local MWR programs that involve physical activity. From sports to fitness centers to youth activities to outdoor recreation, MWR is a premier means for promoting a healthier lifestyle in the military community."

"Operation Be Fit" is the DoD program initiative designed to place renewed emphasis on the physical fitness of the entire military community. This initiative builds on the significant efforts already ongoing within each of the Services by combining expertise within the Department of Defense, and by adding Department emphasis and endorsement to those efforts. The goals of "Operation Be Fit" are to improve and expand program offerings in fitness, sports and recreation activities that involve physical activity and increase individual participation in physical activities within the military community.
