ARMY SECRETARY CALDERA APPROVES ARLINGTON BURIAL
Secretary of the Army Louis Caldera approved today the request of House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Minority Leader Richard Gephardt to designate U. S. Capitol Police Detective John Michael Gibson to be buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
Capitol Police Private First Class Jacob Joseph Chestnut, a retired Air Force member, is eligible for burial at Arlington by virtue of his military service.
Detective Gibson and Private First Class Chestnut were the first U.S. Capitol Police killed in the line of duty, and the two House leaders sought the honor of burial at Arlington as a tribute to their bravery and heroism.
Attached is a copy of the request from Speaker Gingrich and Minority Leader Gephardt as well as Secretary Caldera's approval, indicating the request will be "fully honored."
