STATEMENT BY ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF DEFENSE FOR PUBLIC AFFAIRS KEN BACON

"Defense Secretary William S. Cohen has completed successful consultations with leaders of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman and the United Arab Emirates.

"He found the Gulf countries united in their condemnation of Iraq's refusal to allow weapons inspections by the United Nations Special Commission. Iraq's action challenges the credibility of the United Nations Security Council. Iraq is threatening the peace and stability of the region by spurning the Security Council's requirements that it dismantle its weapons of mass destruction program.

"In the discussions, Secretary Cohen reviewed possible responses to Iraq's flagrant violation of Security Council resolutions. Based on his meetings, Secretary Cohen is confident that the United States will have the support it needs to take appropriate action to uphold the United Nations Security Council resolutions.

"Secretary Cohen will continue his regional consultations with leaders in Egypt, Jordan and Turkey."
