MAJ. GEN. RICHARD O. WIGHTMAN JR. APPOINTED TO RESERVE FORCES POLICY BOARD

Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen has announced the designation of Maj. Gen. Richard O. Wightman Jr. as the U.S. Army Reserve member of the Reserve Forces Policy Board, effective Nov. 1, 1999.

The 24-member board was created by Congress in 1952.

Acting through the assistant secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs, the board serves as the principal policy advisor to the Secretary of Defense on Reserve matters. The Reserve component members, combined with the civilian and Active component members, provide the Secretary of Defense with a unique and independent body of senior officials to review and comment upon Reserve component programs and policies.

Members include the assistant secretary responsible for Reserve Affairs from each of the military departments, and active duty and Reserve forces general and flag officers representing all Services, including the Coast Guard.

Wightman is currently serving as the commander, 143rd Transportation Command, Orlando, Fla. In his civilian capacity, he serves as senior military analyst, Joint and Army Doctrine Directorate, deputy chief of staff for Doctrine, Headquarters, U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, Fort Monroe, Va.

His recent military experience includes service as the deputy commanding general for Mobilization, Military Traffic Management Command, Falls Church, Va., and assistant deputy chief of staff for Logistics (Mobilization and Training), Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics, Washington, D.C.
