Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen and Australian Minister for Defence John Moore today signed a Statement of Principles for Enhanced Cooperation in Matters of Defense Equipment and Industry.

The statement recognizes longstanding cooperative relationships between Australia and the United States across a broad spectrum of defense activities. The agreement establishes principles for further mutual cooperation, including harmonization of military requirements and acquisition processes, security of supply of defense articles and services, export procedures, protection of national security and defense technology information, industrial partnerships, research and development, and reciprocal defense trade.

Cohen and Moore have decided that, in a time of increased globalization, it is in the common interest of both nations to facilitate both traditional and new types of cooperation between defense companies. The result is expected to be a stronger U.S. and Australian industrial base. Enhanced cooperation envisioned in the statement will improve the overall defense industrial security posture of the two nations and will provide an improved climate to pursue common objectives.

Cohen and Moore have agreed to establish policy-level and working-level groups of subject matter experts to develop further the principles set out in the statement, in order to establish specific implementing arrangements as quickly as possible.
