Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness Bernard D. Rostker is scheduled to speak at the second Department of Defense (DoD) Conference on Civilian Education and Professional Development, which will be held at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Bethesda, Md., on August 8-9, 2000.
The conference theme, "Quality Initiatives for the 21st Century: Continuing the Dialogue," reflects the challenge from the deputy secretary of Defense at last year's conference to "build a community of practice" in the department. This will be an opportunity for representatives from DoD education and professional development organizations to come together as a community and examine best practices in education. The conference will feature keynote presentations by education experts in the higher education community, including the Department of Education and the Department of Defense. The afternoon sessions feature three concurrent quality tracks: distributed learning, internal assessment processes, and external recognition processes.
Further information, on-line registration, and agenda information for the conference is available at http://www.chancellor.osd.mil or call Karen Carleton at (703) 696-7179. Functional policy and oversight staff, administrators, faculty, and staff of institutions and programs providing education or professional development for DoD employees are welcome to attend.
