COHEN MOURNS DEATH OF BATEMAN
Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen today released the following statement:
"The death of Representative Herb Bateman is a great loss to this country and the Department of Defense.
"A strong proponent of our national defense, he provided wise leadership and counsel as a senior member of the Armed Services Committee and chair of the Subcommittee on Military Readiness. His convictions, wise leadership and steady support helped guide the military through its crucial years of downsizing and to make it the best fighting force in the world.
"Representative Bateman's 16 years of selfless service will live on as a legacy of his dedication to the nation and the armed services."
