DOD SELECTS HISPANIC SERVING INSTITUTIONS FOR GRANTS
Today 22 Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) were selected to receive 25 grants totaling $4.7 million from the Department of Defense. These grants will be made under the fiscal 2001 DoD Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority Institutions (HBCU/MI) program, designed to enhance minority universities' capabilities to perform science and engineering research and related education in science, mathematics and engineering areas critical to national defense.
The grants were competitively selected from 67 proposals submitted to the Office of Naval Research and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research in response to a broad agency announcement issued in October 2000. The Services plan to award 18 instrumentation grants ranging from $47,000 to $200,000 and seven research grants averaging $375,000 to HSIs.
This announcement is the result of rigorous competition over many months under the DoD HBCU/MI program. After a thorough evaluation by technical expert teams, 25 proposals were selected for funding. Awards will be made only after written agreements are reached between the Department and the institutions.
The list of recipients is available on line at http://www.defenselink.mil/news/Jul2001/d20010727hsi.pdf.
