GENERAL OFFICER ASSIGNMENT
Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld announced today that the president has nominated Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Martin R. Berndt for appointment to the rank of lieutenant general with assignment as the commander, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Atlantic; commanding general, Fleet Marine Force Atlantic; commander, U.S. Marine Corps Bases Atlantic; commander, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Europe; commanding general, Fleet Marine Forces Europe; and commander, U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Southern Command, Norfolk, Va. Berndt is currently serving as the commanding general, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.
