STATEMENT FROM CHAIRMAN OF THE JOINT CHIEFS OF STAFF
GENERAL JOHN M. SHALIKASHVILI
I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of one of the great patriots of
our country. Les Aspin possessed strong academic credentials, a wealth of
experience in the area of national security, and a distinguished record of
serving his country. He was a true champion of a strong and ready defense, who
never forgot the needs of the men and women in uniform.
As chairman, I worked for and with him for only two months, but admired the
commitment and leadership he provided to the Department of Defense.
He loved his country. He served it well. He will be missed.
On behalf of the all the men and women in uniform, I extend our deepest
sympathy to the Aspin family on the loss of this great American and patriot.
