General Officer Announcement
Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld announced today that the president has nominated Air Force Maj. Gen. Walter E. L. Buchanan III for appointment to the rank of lieutenant general with assignment as commander, Ninth Air Force, Air Combat Command; and commander, U.S. Central Command Air Forces, Shaw Air Force Base, S.C. Buchanan is currently serving as special assistant to the Deputy Chief of Staff, Air and Space Operations, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C.
