SERVICES PLANNED FOR DR. JOSEPH KRUZEL

Dr. Joseph Kruzel, 50, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for European andNATO Affairs, died Saturday of injuries suffered in a vehicle accident inBosnia-Herzegovina.

A joint memorial service for Dr. Kruzel, Ambassador Frasure and Colonel Drew isscheduled for 1 p.m., Wednesday, August 23, at Fort Myer. Press desiring tocover this service should contact Kim Walz at Military District WashingtonPublic Affairs, 202-475-0856.

Funeral services for Dr. Kruzel will be on Thursday, August 24, at Fort Myerfollowed by interment at Arlington National Cemetery. These services will belimited to friends and family and will not be open to the media.

Dr. Kruzel became Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for European and NATOAffairs in 1993. Prior to that he had been actively involved in U.S. defensepolicy as both an academic and a practitioner. A 1967 U.S. Air Force Academydistinguished graduate, Kruzel received both his M.S. and Ph. D. from HarvardUniversity. He taught at Harvard, Duke and Ohio State University. Dr. Kruzelalso directed the Program on International Security and Military Affairs of theMershon Center at Ohio State.

Dr. Kruzel served as an intelligence officer in Vietnam and as a member of theU.S. delegation to the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT), for which hereceived the Distinguished Service Award. Kruzel's other government serviceincludes assignments as assistant to Secretary of Defense Harold Brown andlegislative assistant for defense and foreign policy for Senator Edward M.Kennedy. He had also done consulting work for the Arms Control and DisarmamentAgency, the Department of Defense and the National Security Council.

While a member of the faculty at Ohio State, Dr. Kruzel was a vestry member andchairman of the Outreach Program at Saint Marks Episcopal Church in UpperArlington, Ohio. He was also an active member of St. Francis Episcopal Churchin Great Falls, Virginia.

Dr. Kruzel is survived by his wife, Gail Chipman, and two children, Sarah andJohn.
