1995 FALL CONFERENCE
The Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Service (DACOWITS) will conduct
their Fall Conference in Phoenix, Arizona, October 11-15, 1995. Mr. Fred Pang,
assistant secretary of Defense for Force Management and Personnel will host the
conference. He and other keynote speakers will address the progress of women
in the services. The conference is open to the public.
The committee meets formally each spring and fall to discuss current issues
facing women in the military services. The DACOWITS is divided into three
sub-committees which address issues relevant to Equality Management, Forces
Utilization and Development, and Quality of Life.
DACOWITS was established in 1951 by then Secretary of Defense George C.
Marshall. The Committee was formed to assist and advise the Secretary on
policies and matters relating to women in the Military Services. In its
advisory capacity, the Committee recommends measures to ensure the effective
utilization of women in the Armed Forces.
DACOWITS is composed of civilian women and men who have outstanding
reputations in their fields of endeavor. Members are appointed by the
Secretary of Defense for a 3-year term. DACOWITS has been instrumental in
bringing to fruition an unprecedented number of opportunities for qualified
women to serve in our armed forces. Many new jobs, and in some cases whole new
career fields, have been opened to women.
Additional keynote speakers include the Honorable Beverly Byron, former
congresswomen from Maryland; the Honorable Sheila Widnall, secretary of the Air
Force; Gen. Thomas Moorman, vice chief of staff of the Air Force; Ms. Sarah
Lister, assistant
secretary of the Army for Manpower and Reserve Affairs; Maj. Gen. Jeanne Holm,
USAF (Ret.); Ms. Ruby DeMesme, deputy assistant secretary of the Air Force for
Force Management and Personnel; and Ms. Betsey Bayless, District 3 Supervisor
for Maricopa County. Luke Air Force Base is the supporting unit.
