Secretary of Defense William Perry has named Margaret R. Munson as the new
director of the Defense Investigative Service. She replaces John F. Donnelly
who retired from federal service on March 1, 1996.
Munson has held significant positions in both the Defense Intelligence Agency
and the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Most recently she was the acting
director for Counterintelligence and Security Programs in the office of the
assistant secretary of Defense for Command, Control, Communications and
Intelligence (C3I). Previously she served as the acting director of Planning
and Administration and chief of Data Base Management in the Defense
Intelligence Agency. In 1991, she was selected by the assistant secretary of
Defense (C3I) to organize and manage a special Department of Defense office to
assist the work of the Senate Select Committee on Prisoner of War/Missing in
Action Affairs.
Munson attended Creighton University in Omaha, Neb. and the University of
Madrid in Spain, receiving a bachelor of arts degree. She has a master of
science degree in Administration (Information Systems Technology) from George
Washington University and is a graduate of the National War College.
The new director has been recognized with the DIA Director's Award for
Exceptional Civilian Service (1988); the Secretary of Defense Medal for
Meritorious Civilian Service (1992); the Department of Defense Distinguished
Civilian Service Award (1995); and the Presidential Rank Award for Meritorious
Executive (1995).
The Defense Investigative Service is responsible for personnel security
investigations within the Department of Defense and managing the defense
portion of the national security industrial program.
