March 25, 1996

Secretary of Defense William J. Perry has announced the designation of Air National Guard Maj. Gen. Glen W. Van Dyke as a member of the Reserve Forces Policy Board effective March 1, 1996. Van Dyke currently serves as the adjutant general of the Arizona National Guard.

The 24-member Reserve Forces Policy Board was created by Congress in 1952. Acting through the assistant secretary of Defense for reserve affairs, the board serves as the principal policy advisor to the secretary of Defense on reserve component matters. Members include the assistant secretary responsible for Reserve Affairs from each of the military departments, and active and reserve component general and flag officers representing all Services, including the Coast Guard.

The general began his military career by enlisting with the 162nd Tactical Fighter Group Arizona Air National Guard, Tucson, Ariz., in 1961. In May 1965, he was commissioned a second lieutenant and entered pilot training, graduating in June 1966. Since that time, he has accumulated more than 4,900 flying hours in the T-33, F-100, F-102, A-7 and F-16 aircraft. His military experience includes service as an interceptor and instructor pilot, numerous squadron and wing-level operations positions, and several command billets before assuming his current position in April 1994. He holds a bachelor's degree in architecture from the University of Arizona. He has also completed military requirements for Air Command and Staff College, Air War College, and the National Security Management Course.

Van Dyke's military decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with four oak leaf clusters, and Combat Readiness Medal.

The general and his wife, the former Karen Rowenhourst of Marion, S.D., reside in Tucson. They have four children: Stacy, Michele, Matthew and Jessica.
