Release No: 269-96
May 10, 1996

Delegates of the United States and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea have signed an agreement in New York City following five days of negotiations on accounting for American remains from the Korean War.

The text of the agreement is:

The United States and the DPRK delegations met in New York City during 4-9 May, 1996 to hold talks on the remains issue of US servicemen missing from the Korean War, and agreed as follows:

--The US side expressed appreciation to the DPRK side for its past sincere efforts in recovering and returning US servicemen's remains. The US side will pay the DPRK side $2 million US dollars for the costs of these past efforts. Both sides agreed that this compensation will not serve as a precedent for any future compensation.

--Both sides agreed to a working level meeting during the first half of June at a place to be determined to discuss the issues involving joint recovery operations. Both sides expect this technical meeting will result in joint recovery operations this year.

-- Both sides express their belief that this agreement will contribute to the improvement of US-DPRK relations.
