With a new look and feel, an expanded and improved
DefenseLINK is now on line.
The new DefenseLINK, which was created in response to the user
comments and suggestions, provides a variety of new material and
a wider selection of information while continuing to provide
direct access to the information services established by the
military departments and other DoD organizations.
A new simpler home page graphic has been designed to speed up
system access, and more consistent graphics are now used to
better unify the system. Also to simplify the home page layout
and allow for possible future changes, several Defense
organizations have been grouped under the Other
Organizations section. In this section users will
find information on DoD organizations such as the DoD's Inspector General, the
Unified Combatant
Commands, Defense Field Activities
and Other Defense
Related
Organizations.
A highlight of the new DefenseLINK is the Other Information
section. Here the user will find Biographies,
Career Opportunities
and Information, Doing Business with the
Department of Defense, Education
and History.
Additional areas will be added in the future.
DefenseLINK continues to provides access to the feature sections
which include News, Publications, Questions and Answers, and a
Search function.
The News
section carries DoD news releases, DoD contract award
announcements (for award of $5 million or more), press
advisories, memoranda for correspondents, daily public schedules
for the Secretary and Deputy Secretary of Defense, and
transcripts of DoD news and background briefings and selected
speeches.
The Publications
section links to on-line copies of Department of Defense
directives and instructions, and to on-line publications such as
Defense Issues. The Defense Fact File, which provides fact sheets on DoD organizations, aircraft,
ships, vehicles and weapons is now located in the Publications
section.
Under Questions?
the user finds answers to many frequently asked questions, such
as where to get military records or technical manuals, or how to
arrange for a tour of the Pentagon.
The new Search section
replaces the former Locator section and uses the Department of
Defense's portion of the Government Information Locator Service
to provide a searchable index of DefenseLINK material and to
provide an on-line card catalog of information available to the
public.
DefenseLINK is a joint effort by DoD Public
Affairs and the Defense
Technical Information Center. The site, which went
on-line November 10, 1994, averages more than 500,000 visitors
each month. It is a 24-hour, 7-day a week service accessible via
web browsers at URL http://www.defenselink.mil/
