Secretary of Defense William J. Perry announced today that the President has nominated Maj. Gen. Joseph E. DeFrancisco, United States Army, for appointment to the grade of lieutenant general and assignment as deputy commander in chief/chief of staff, United States Pacific Command, Camp H. M. Smith, Hawaii. Since June 1994, he has served as the commanding general, 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized), Fort Stewart, Ga.

DeFrancisco was born on March 9, 1942, in Albany, N.Y.
