General Officer Announcement
Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld announced today that the President has nominated Army Maj. Gen. Lloyd J. Austin III for appointment to the grade of lieutenant general and assignment as commanding general, XVIII Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg, Fort Bragg, N.C. Austin is currently serving as the chief of staff, U.S. Central Command, MacDill Air Force Base, Fla.
