Thank you, Michael.
Thanks Tony and General Brown. Thanks for being here today.
As the President said in the State of the Union address last week, this past year has been a tough one for many people in America, and indeed tough for many of those around the world.
We need not look further than Haiti to see how others are living in conditions that are a world apart from those we know.
And yet in Haiti—and in other places closer to home—we do not have to sit idly by.
After a disaster or in moments of ordinary need, we can use our time and our generosity to make a difference.
The men and women of the Defense Department know this.
We have already sworn an oath to protect and serve our country. And through the Combined Federal Campaign, we can also contribute financially.
We can donate a portion of our paychecks to worthy causes, helping provide charities with a steady stream of income each and every pay period of the year.
Through our voluntary donations, we help make our neighborhoods, our country, and this world a better place.
We have also given more, and more of us have given, each year.
This year, I know people had to dig deeper to give. Despite the uncertainty in the economy, the men and women of DOD have come through again.
I am pleased to announce that this year we have achieved a grand total higher than ever before:
$17.2 million dollars.
$17.2 million dollars given by the men and women of the Defense Department in the National Capital Region.
This is a million dollars more than 2008—which itself was a highpoint in our history.
Many people helped us reach this total.
45% of our employees took part in the Combined Federal Campaign.
That’s nearly one out of two people in our Department, a significantly higher rate of participation than almost any other federal department.
And every office that participated exceeded its target donation. Every single office.
Six offices even raised more than a million dollars each—showing the crucial role we play in motivating our friends and our colleagues to join in the giving.
So I would like to thank all participating members of our Department for their generosity.
Now for the good part, the presentation of the check.
