Thanks very much, Michael.
It’s a pleasure to be with you here today.
On behalf of Secretary Gates, it’s my honor today to present the awards for OSD Junior and Senior Enlisted Servicemember of the Year.
The enlisted servicemembers within OSD are a select group. The support they provide is critical to our success. Indeed they’re the backbone of the OSD organization.
The enormous task of keeping OSD running seamlessly, day in and day out, falls on their shoulders. And it’s their hard work, and their dedication, that make it happen.
Though the work you do so often takes place out of immediate view, it’s never unnoticed and certainly not unappreciated.
Before presenting the Junior and Senior Enlisted Servicemembers of the Year, I’d like first to recognize the award nominees who are present this morning.
Senior Enlisted Nominee Master Sergeant Danny Alltop, of Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute.
Master Sergeant Alltop is an Equal Opportunity Advisor, serving as the facilitator for DoD Civilian, Active Duty, and Reserve personnel. An airman himself, Master Sergeant Alltop also serves as a facilitator for Air Force Service Specific training.
And Junior Enlisted Nominee Sergeant Anthony White, of OSD Executive Dining. Sergeant White is a lead chef in the Executive mess. And does a terrific job supporting us there.
We are also honored to have family members and special guests with us today.
We appreciate the sacrifices that you make so that your loved ones can serve the nation. And I know you share our pride in the work that they do.
It now gives me pleasure to recognize two outstanding members of our team as OSD’s Senior and Junior Enlisted Servicemembers of the year.
Sergeant First Class Jessica Stein: Senior Enlisted OSD Servicemember of the year.
Sergeant First Class Stein serves as Accountant for the Secretary of Defense Executive Dining Facility, where she is responsible for the accounting management and analysis of the Executive Mess’s Working Capital Fund.
Let me give you an idea of how astute a financial manager Sergeant Stein is.
After completing a course on the financial management of deployed operations, the Commandant of the Finance School invited her back to teach it. Her expertise on budget operations in Iraq is substantial. And we’re lucky to have her here in the Pentagon.
I’m also pleased to recognize our Junior Enlisted OSD Servicemember of the year: Staff Sergeant Dorsey Creech.
Staff Sergeant Creech serves as an Awards Manager for OSD Military Personnel, in the awards section.
Staff Sergeant Creech came to OSD in 2005. And he has done such great work here that his assignment was extended for an additional year. But after more than four years in OSD, we finally have to let him go.
In July, Staff Sergeant Creech will transition to Ft. Huachuca, Arizona. We wish him well there.
Sergeant First Class Stein, Staff Sergeant Creech: Thank you for everything that you contribute every day.
I know working in OSD means a lot of early mornings, as well as a lot of late evenings.
The excellence that you bring to each task that you undertake is an example for us all.
And thanks again.
