Today in the Department of Defense, August 19-21, 2000

Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen is on leave this weekend. On Monday, Aug. 21, Secretary Cohen will speak at the national convention of the Veterans of Foreign War and Ladies Auxiliary in Milwaukee, Wis. See the press advisory for more details.

Deputy Secretary of Defense Rudy de Leon is in Washington this weekend. On Monday, Aug. 21, Deputy Secretary de Leon will speak at the American Federation of Government Employees national convention in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. See the press advisory for more details.

Nearly 2,900 servicemen and women are now helping to fight wildfires in the West. See the DoD news briefing transcript for a summary.

Arctic SAREX 00, a combined arctic search and rescue exercise in Russia, continues through Aug. 19. Members of the U.S. Alaskan Command, Alaska Air National Guard, Alaska Army National Guard, Canadian air forces and Russian air forces are participating. See the news release for details.
