Presenter: Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz February 04, 2004

Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz interview with Kurdish TV

Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz interview with Kurdish TV

Q:  Deputy Secretary of Defense, how are you, sir?

[The question] is what's your evaluation about the bombing, especially that's happened the last few days, especially here in Kurdistan.

Wolfowitz:  It's a tragedy.  It's not the first and probably won't be the last.  I know the people of Northern Iraq have suffered enormously over many years.  I'm a good friend of Massoud Barzani and Jalal Talabani and I know from both of them and from their many friends what the Kurdish people have been through, and this is one more terrible act.

Sami Abdul Rahman, the Deputy Prime Minister, was somebody I new and admired, and to see him killed so brutally and so many other wonderful Kurdish leaders and ordinary Kurdish people, it was an act of evil.

I would like to, on my personal behalf but also I know on behalf of President Bush express my deepest sympathy for the families of those who were lost, and to declare our commitment to continue working with the people of Iraq and the Kurdish people to establish freedom and democracy in this country.

            Q:  Thank you.

            Wolfowitz:  Thank you.
