Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen will speak at a U.S. Joint Forces Command change of command ceremony at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, on board USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) in Norfolk, Va. Army Gen. William F. Kernan will assume command from Adm. Harold W. Gehman Jr. as NATO's supreme allied commander, Atlantic, and commander in chief, U.S. Joint Forces Command.
A bus will be available at the Naval Station Pass Office, 4090 Hampton Blvd., Norfolk, Va., to transport members of the press to USS Theodore Roosevelt. This is the only available transportation for news representatives to the ceremony. Attending journalists should arrive at the pass office no later than 10:15 a.m.
News representatives interested in attending the change of command ceremony should call Navy Lt. Brenda Malone, U.S. Joint Forces Command Public Affairs Office, by telephone at (757) 836-6559 by 3 p.m., Friday, Sept. 1.
Attendance at the ceremony is by invitation only, and is not open to the general public.
An attempt will be made to pipe Secretary Cohen's remarks back to the Pentagon. If successful, the remarks will be available on Pentagon internal channel 13, starting at 11 a.m.
