Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen will brief reporters on the Department of Defense's Y2K programs on Thursday, July 22, 1999 at 9:15 a.m. in the DoD briefing studio, Room 2E781, the Pentagon. Cohen will be joined by Deputy Secretary of Defense John J. Hamre and Adm. Richard W. Mies, commander-in-chief of U.S. Strategic Command.
Y2K refers to date-related problems affecting computers, both in DoD systems and those supporting U.S. military installations around the world. DoD officials will address progress in ensuring DoD systems can operate effectively in the year 2000 and beyond; major efforts in the remaining six months before the turn of the year; and the status of nuclear systems compliance.
