Chesapeake Bay Environmental Day

In an effort to protect and restore water quality in the Chesapeake Bay, Defense Department officials and other federal, state and community leaders on Friday will join volunteers to restore forest buffer habitat along an important tributary of the Chesapeake Bay.

Senior officials will join sixty volunteers from the Navy, the Maryland Conservation Corps, and other local groups to plant about 200 trees and shrubs along the Severn River.

During the event, Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Environmental Security Sherri Goodman will release a new report on the DOD strategy to protect and restore the Chesapeake Bay. Goodman will also announce new initiatives to protect water quality around the country.

The event will take place at 2 p.m. (EDT) at Seabee Beach on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Station, Annapolis, Md.

News media interested in covering the event should enter the Naval Station gate and proceed to Seabee Beach to arrive no later than 1:30 p.m. Point of contact is Karen Myers (410) 293-2292.
