The Department of Defense Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization (SADBU) on July 9, 1998 will hold in the Los Angeles area the first meeting to focus attention on ways in which the federal government can work with the private sector to support large business partnering with small businesses. The one-day conference will begin at 8:30 a.m. (PDT) in Building R10 at TRW, One Space Park, Redondo Beach, Calif.
Because of its expertise in subcontracting and business mentoring, DoD SADBU was asked by the Vice President's Community Empowerment Board to assist in the Administration's new initiative to enhance beneficial linkages between large businesses and small businesses. The initiative, announced by Vice President Al Gore on June 5, is called "Business LINC" which stands for Learning, Information, Networking, and Collaboration.
This initiative will help to foster entrepreneurship and special emphasis will be placed on efforts that can assist locally owned small businesses in distressed areas to become more economically competitive. The Redondo Beach meeting is expected to draw more than 100 top officials from the automotive industry, defense industry, business associations and organizations, and the federal government.
Media are invited to cover the conference. The DoD point of contact for press coverage is Glenn Flood, who can be reached in the Pentagon at (703) 695-6294 through Monday, July 6. Starting on Wednesday, July 8, Flood can be reached at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Redondo Beach, (310) 318-8888. The media point of contact at TRW is Sally Koris, (310) 812-4721.
