Department of Defense Unveils New Policy Regarding Federally Recognized Tribes
The Department of Defense will unveil a new policy Wednesday, Oct. 21, 1998, that will guide all DoD interactions with federally recognized tribes. Representing the Secretary of Defense, Principal Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition & Technology David Oliver will present the policy to Ron Allen, president of the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) at their annual meeting in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
The policy was developed to ensure that DoD operates according to President Clinton's 1994 memorandum on "Government to Government Relations with Native American Tribal Governments" and to fulfill DoD responsibilities to consult and cooperate with tribal governments with respect to environmental and natural resource issues affecting tribes.
