Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen will visit with Young
Marines ages 8-18 at Marine Barracks, 8th & I Sts., S.E.,
Washington, D.C. on Thursday, March 20, 1997 at 5:30 p.m.
The 126 Young Marines participating in the program train
twice a week with active duty Marines from Marine Barracks, 8th &
I, who volunteer for the program. Secretary Cohen will meet with
the Young Marines during their bi-weekly training session. He
will also have the opportunity to discuss with their parents the
beneficial effects of this community outreach program. The
Secretary's visit is part of a continuing effort by the
Department of Defense and the White House to highlight and
promote community programs that make a difference in the Nation's
Capitol.
The Young Marines is the official youth program of the
Marine Corps League of the United States. The focus of this
community outreach program is the Marine Corps Youth Drug Demand
Reduction Program. The program promotes the mental, moral, and
physical development of America's youth. Young Marines emphasize
the importance of honesty, courage, respect, loyalty,
dependability and a sense of devotion to God, country, community
and family.
