General John M. Shalikashvili, chairman of the Joint Chiefs
of Staff, will depart Andrews AFB, Md., on Sunday, May 12, 1997,
for a visit to the People's Republic of China at the invitation
of General Fu Quanyou, chief of the General Staff Department,
People's Liberation Army (PLA). During the four-day visit,
General Shalikashvili will meet with Chinese government officials
and leaders of the People's Liberation Army. In addition to
visiting military facilities, installations, and units, he will
address the PLA National Defense University.
On return, General Shalikashvili will deliver the
commencement address at Harvey Mudd College, Claremont, Calif.,
on Sunday, May 18, at 1:30 p.m. (PDT). Prior to the graduation,
he will preside at a ROTC Commissioning Ceremony at 9 a.m. (PDT).
The chairman will return to Washington, D.C. on Monday, May
19, 1997.
