Secretary Perry to award first M mobilization devices on August 29

Secretary of Defense William J. Perry will award the first M mobilization devices to representatives of each of the seven reserve components at 3 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 29, 1996, in the Pentagon Briefing Room, 2E781.

On hand will be senior DoD officials, adjutants general from the surrounding states, representatives of the military associations and families of the award recipients participating in the event.

The bronze M device is awarded to members of the Army and Air National Guard, Army and Air Force Reserve, Navy Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve and U.S. Coast Guard Reserve who have performed qualifying active duty service in support of a contingency operation designated by the Secretary of Defense. On August 6, 1996, President Clinton signed an executive order that established Aug. 1, 1990 as the effective date for qualifying for the award and the authorization for it to be worn on the Armed Forces Reserve Medal.

The executive order makes more than 282,000 National Guard and Reserve members eligible to wear the device, including those who participated in the Persian Gulf War, Operation RESTORE HOPE (Somalia), Operation UPHOLD DEMOCRACY (Haiti) and Operation JOINT ENDEAVOR (Bosnia).
