IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Release No: 129-95
May 01, 1995

No. 129-P:05/01/95:Ambassador Malcolm Toon and General Dmit

Ambassador Malcolm Toon and General Dmitrii Volkogonov, co-chairmen of the U.S. - Russian Joint Commission on POW/MIAs, will sign a report Tuesday, May 2, 1995 citing highlights from the Commission's work since its establishment in March 1992. The signing will take place in the Capitol Building, room EF-100 at 4 p.m. (EDT). The document will be presented to President Clinton and President Yeltsin at the VE Day celebration in Moscow on May 9th.

Consisting of a preamble and statements from the Commission's four working groups (World War II, Korea, Cold War, and Vietnam), the document addresses the following points: specific accomplishments, areas requiring further investigation, and initiatives which the Commission plans to pursue in its search for information about missing servicemen from both nations.

The Commission's report reflects the level of trust and cooperation that existed between Russia and the U.S. during World War II and has been re-established in the three years since the governments agreed to work together on resolving the fate of those who remain unaccounted for from past wars.

The event is open to the media. For further information, contact Deborah Klepp, State Department, 202-647-6756.
