General John M. Shalikashvili, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will
depart Andrews Air Force Base, Md., today, June 2, 1995, for a visit to Paris,
France; Vienna, Austria; Naples, Italy; Zagreb, Croatia, and Brussels, Belgium.
In Paris, the chairman will take part in meetings with his NATO and European
Union counterparts. While in Vienna, he is scheduled to meet with General of
the Army Mikhail Kolesnikov, chief of the Russian General Staff, to discuss
issues of mutual interest and concern. He will also meet with the Austrian
Minister of Defense and the Chief of Defense. In Naples, General Shalikashvili
will meet with the commander in chief, Allied Forces Southern Europe; and in
Zagreb, he will meet with UN officials and visit U.S. troops. The chairman will
then travel to Brussels to attend the Defense Planning Committee/Nuclear
Planning Group meetings on June 8-9.
The chairman will return to Washington, D.C. on June 9.
