Secretary of Defense William J. Perry will host an informal meeting of the
Defense Ministers of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) at Colonial
Williamsburg, Virginia, October 4-7, 1995. NATO Secretary General Willy Claes
will serve as chairman of the meeting.
Others expected to attend include the Permanent Representatives (ambassadors)
and Chiefs of Defense Staff (equivalent to the U.S. Chairman of the Joint
Chiefs of Staff) of all 16 Alliance members. The number of delegates and
support staff is expected to total approximately 500.
Following past practices, Ministers will engage in an unstructured,
free-flowing discussion of a variety of defense issues related to the current
security situation. There will be no communiqué. Ministers will report
their own impressions of the meeting to the media. Accordingly, Secretary
Perry and Secretary-General Claes will hold individual press conferences on
Friday, October 6, 1995.
In connection with the meeting, on Friday morning, October 6, 1995, Ministers
will fly to the USS Mt. Whitney and USS Enterprise deployed off the Virginia
Capes to observe NATO command, control and communications capabilities and a
seapower demonstration. Ships and aircraft from the United Kingdom, Canada and
France are also expected to participate. These events will be open to media
coverage on a pool basis. Interested media should contact the Media Center for
pool selection information.
