Secretary of Defense William J. Perry will host an informal meeting of the
Defense Ministers of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) at Colonial
Williamsburg, Virginia, October 4-7, 1995. NATO Secretary General Willy Claes
will serve as chairman of the meeting.
Others expected to attend include the Permanent Representatives (ambassadors)
and Chiefs of Defense Staff (equivalent to the U.S. Chairman of the Joint
Chiefs of Staff) of all 16 Alliance members. The number of delegates and
support staff is expected to total approximately 500.
Following past practices, Ministers will engage in an unstructured,
free-flowing discussion of a variety of defense issues related to the current
security situation. There will be no communiqué. Ministers will report
their own impressions of the meeting to the media. Accordingly, Secretary
Perry and Secretary-General Claes will hold individual press conferences on
Friday, October 6, 1995.
In connection with the meeting, on Friday morning, October 6, 1995, Ministers
will fly to the USS Mt. Whitney and USS Enterprise deployed off the Virginia
Capes to observe NATO command, control and communications capabilities and a
seapower demonstration. Ships and aircraft from the United Kingdom, Canada and
France are also expected to participate. These events will be open to media
coverage on a pool basis. Interested media should contact the Media Center for
pool selection information.
For information on scheduled events and the type of media coverage which will
be allowed, consult the attached tentative schedule. Media should contact the
Media Center upon arrival to obtain a final, confirmed schedule of events.
The formal portion of the meeting will take place in the Williamsburg Lodge.
The Media Center will be located in the Williamsburg Woodlands Commonwealth
Hall, near the Colonial Williamsburg Visitor's center, just off Route 132Y.

Media passes will be available for collection starting at 9 a.m., October 2, at
the Media Center's Accreditation Desk upon presentation of a valid press pass
and other photographic proof of identity. Media members who have not sent a
request form in advance will be required to complete the request for
accreditation form prior to receiving a press pass.
The Media Center is located approximately 20 minutes driving time from the
nearest airport, Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport. Washington
National Airport and Washington Dulles Airport are approximately three hours
drive from Colonial Williamsburg. The main highway into the area is Interstate
64, exit 238. There is limited Amtrak passenger train and Greyhound bus
service to Colonial Williamsburg. Cars may be rented at the Newport
News/Williamsburg International Airport from a variety of companies. Parking
is available at the Media Center. One lot will be reserved near the Media
Center for large trucks.
