No. 252-P:11/08/94:Senator John H. Chafee (R-Rhode Island),
Senator John H. Chafee (R-Rhode Island), former Secretary of the Navy, will
place a wreath at the base of the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, VA,
during the annual memorial ceremony to honor fallen Marines, on Thursday,
November 10, 1994, at 10 a.m. This ceremony is free and open to the public.
Senator Chafee, as a Marine Corps corporal, was a member of the original
invasion forces at Guadalcanal. Later receiving a reserve commission, he was
recalled to active duty in 1951 and commanded a rifle company in Korea.
General Carl E. Mundy Jr., Commandant of the Marine Corps, will accompany the
senator during the ceremony, which will be held on the 219th anniversary of the
founding of the U.S. Marine Corps. Navy Captain Larry H. Ellis, Chaplain of
the marine Corps, will give the invocation and offer the memorial prayer.
"The President's Own" United States Marine Band will present a concert prior to
the ceremony. The U.S. Marine Drum and Bugle corps and two marching companies
from Marine Barracks will also participate in the ceremony.
