DoD Official To Explain “Giving Thanks” Text Message Program
Allison Barber, deputy assistant secretary of defense for public affairs, will discuss the DoD initiative “Giving Thanks” during a roundtable discussion at noon EST, Nov. 20, in Pentagon Room 2E556.
Under the department’s America Supports You program, people can send a text message until midnight, PDT, Nov. 22, Thanksgiving Day to be viewed by military members serving abroad. By texting to number 89279, people can take a moment during the holiday to thank those who are serving away from family and friends. Senders of messages will incur standard text-message fees based on their wireless provider, but servicemembers will be able to view messages free by visiting a special Web page.
Journalists without a Pentagon building pass will be picked up at the North Parking Entrance only. Plan to arrive no later than 45 minutes prior to the event; have proof of affiliation and two forms of photo identification. Please call (703) 697-5131 for escort into the building.
