DoD Marks Armed Forces and Civil Service Integration Anniversary
Secretary of Defense Robert Gates will host a ceremony honoring the 60th Anniversary of the signing of Executive Orders 9980 and 9981 integrating the armed forces and the federal civil service at 9 a.m. EDT, Aug. 6, at the Pentagon auditorium (Basement level, G ring, 6th corridor).
Also speaking will be historian Michael Gardner, author of “Harry Truman and Civil Rights: Moral Courage and Political Risks,” and Ken Hechler, a White House assistant and speechwriter for President Truman. Gardner and Hechler will be available for media afterwards.
Journalists without a Pentagon building pass will be picked up at the North Parking Entrance only. Plan to arrive no later than 45 minutes prior to the event; have proof of affiliation and two forms of photo identification. Please call (703) 697-5131 for escort into the building.
