Navy to Present Steel from The Pentagon to Arlington County Officials on 9/11

Secretary of the Navy Donald C. Winter will present steel taken from the impact site of the Pentagon to Arlington County officials in a ceremony on Sept. 11, 2008, at the Pentagon. Arlington County Officials will donate the steel for display aboard the USS Arlington, currently under construction in Pascagoula, Miss. Invited speakers include Sen. John Warner, Sen. James Webb, and Rep. James Moran. The ceremony will take place at 1 p.m. EDT outside the Secretary of the Navy’s office, Pentagon, 4E686.

The steel is being presented to Arlington County as a memorial to those who were killed in the attack on the Pentagon, and in recognition of the bravery of the first responders who arrived on scene that day from Arlington and many other communities in the D.C. Metro area.

Press members with Pentagon credentials should be in place no later than 12:50 p.m. Press members without Pentagon credentials who were credentialed for the Sept. 11 Memorial Dedication, or press members not already cleared to be on the Pentagon reservation, should email Lt. Sarah Blansett (sarah.blansett@navy.mil) with their credentials to arrange an escort to the secretary’s office.

Parking is not available at the Pentagon. Registered press members are encouraged to take the Metro. Media members with hand-carried equipment will enter security on the east side of the south parking area through marked press lanes.
