DOD BUDGET REQUESTS, DEFENSE REVIEWS BRIEFINGS ANNOUNCED

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen will conduct a briefing at 1 p.m. EST on Monday, Feb. 1, in the Department of Defense (DoD) Briefing Room, Pentagon 2E973, to discuss President Barack Obama’s fiscal 2011 budget proposal to the Congress, as well as two defense reviews and a fiscal 2010 supplemental war funding request.

At 1:45 p.m., Under Secretary of Defense (Policy) Michèle Flournoy will provide an overview briefing on the Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR) and Ballistic Missile Defense Review (BMDR). At 2:30 p.m., Under Secretary of Defense (Comptroller/CFO) Robert Hale will provide an overview briefing on the fiscal 2011 defense budget proposal and a fiscal 2010 supplemental war funding request. Vice Adm. Steve Stanley, director, force structure, resources and assessment, Joint Staff, will accompany both Flournoy and Hale. Following these overviews, representatives from the Department of the Army (3:15 p.m.), Department of the Navy (4 p.m.), Department of the Air Force (4:45 p.m.), and the Missile Defense Agency (5:30 p.m.) will conduct briefs and answer media questions.

All journalists must be seated by 12:45 p.m. in Pentagon 2E973. Journalists without a Pentagon building pass must be picked up at the River Entrance only. Plan to arrive no later than 60 minutes prior to the event, have proof of affiliation and two forms of photo identification. Please call 703-697-5131 for escort into the building.

Briefs will begin at 1 p.m. and end at approximately 6:15 p.m. All seven briefs with Q/A are scheduled for 40 minutes with five minute turnover breaks in between. There will be no time provided to stop the briefs in order to file. We encourage outlets to bring more than one reporter, but all briefs are in sequential order to allow for maximum coverage.

A limited number of budget and defense review documents will be available in paper copy form in the DoD Press Office, Pentagon 2D950, next to the briefing room. Because of the large number of journalists expected to attend, only one paper copy per media outlet will be available. Electronic copies and press releases will be available online at 12:30 p.m. at http://www.budget.mil and http://www.defense.gov/defensereviews and http://www.defense.gov/releases.
