The Department of Defense will observe Asian Pacific American Heritage Month at a luncheon and awards ceremony on May 22. The Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness, David S.C. Chu , will host the event and be the keynote speaker. Chu is the highest-ranking civilian of Asian descent in the Department of Defense.
The department's observance will take place from noon until to 2 p.m. EDT at the Omni Shoreham Hotel, 2500 Calvert Street, N.W., Washington, D.C.
Awards will be presented to outstanding military servicemembers who have made significant contributions to the advancement of Asian Pacific Americans and the promotion of diversity and equal opportunity in the federal work force. There will be one award each for the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Army National Guard, Air National Guard, and Coast Guard.
The luncheon is being held in conjunction with the Federal Asian Pacific American Council 2002 Annual Congressional Seminar and National Leadership Training Conference [web site no longer available] , at the Omni Shoreham Hotel, May 21-23.
