Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony Marks First Dod-California Buffer Zone Agreement

Assistant Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Environment, Safety and Occupational Health Alex Beehler, and Capt. Paul E. Hennes, executive officer, Naval Base Coronado, will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at noon PST, at the U.S. Navy's Mountain Warfare Training Facility, La Posta, Calif., to mark the first joint Department of Defense-California land acquisition of a military buffer zone in the state.

The ceremony will be held adjacent to land parcels purchased with funds provided by the DoD, the California Resources Agency's Wildlife Conservation Board and The Nature Conservancy, a partnership formed under a program authorized by Congress through the Defense Authorization Act of fiscal 2003, to preserve habitat and protect military installations from the impact of encroachment.

Other scheduled guest speakers at the ceremony include: California's Secretary for Resources Mike Chrisman and The Nature Conservancy's Senior Policy Advisor Bob Barnes.

Media interested in covering the ceremony should contact Patricia O'Connor at (619) 437-5214 or patricia.o'connor@navsoc.navy.mil no later than 9 a.m. PST, Tuesday, Feb. 21, to make arrangements for access to the ceremony site.
