The Department of Defense will sponsor a flag relay Sept. 8-11 to honor all the victims and heroes of the Sept. 11 attacks. An American flag flown at a field location in Afghanistan and at the Pentagon will be passed from runner to runner covering 94 legs over a distance of 467.75 miles. The general route of the relay is from the Pentagon to the Flight 93 crash site in Pennsylvania to Ground Zero in New York City.
The relay will start at 2 a.m. EDT on Sept. 8 from the Pentagon South Parking lot. The route will proceed around the west side of the building to the Memorial Bridge and cross in to the District of Columbia. The relay will then continue on through Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York.
Active duty and Reserve forces from all military services, DoD civilians, retirees, and midshipmen from the U.S. Naval Academy will be participating.
The final leg of the relay will consist of service members from the four military services. The New York Police Department will meet the group at the Holland Tunnel and escort the group to Ground Zero. The mayor or one of his senior representatives will accept the flag from the group at Ground Zero at 9 a.m. on Sept. 11.
