Champion Trees to be Living Memorial on Pentagon Ground

Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul D. Wolfowitz will join Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin and other congressional members from Michigan in a ceremony marking the creation of a living memorial on the grounds of the Pentagon on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 10 a.m. EDT. At that time, nine champion red ash trees, which were grown in Michigan and provided by the National Tree Trust and the Champion Tree Project, will be planted near the entrance to the Metro station.

The trees are all genetic duplicates of the National Champion red ash tree that grows in Dowagiac, Mich. Champion trees are the largest and often the oldest examples of their species.

The DoD point of contact for this event is Claude Chafin, (703) 614-8423. The point of contact for the National Tree Trust is Paul Rosenthal, (202) 628-8733, ext. 17.
